International Society of Fish and Shellfish Immunology (ISFSI)

The International Society of Fish and Shellfish Immunology (ISFSI) was established in 2010 and was initially part of the “Projektstyregruppen for Fiskeimmunologi” society that was established in 1990 with an aim to foster collaboration between Nordic countries in fish immunology and to combat diseases in aquaculture. This society was primarily engaged in providing financial support as grants to researchers working in fish immunology, organizing international conferences and launching collaborative projects.

The primary mission of ISFSI is to bring together the scientists researching different aspects of immunology in aquatic animals that includes vertebrates and invertebrates. The main objectives of ISFSI were to organizing international conferences to encourage knowledge sharing and collaborations, promote cooperation between various branches of aquatic immunology, encourage academic and industrial collaborations in aquatic immunology, and to promote and encourage applied research in aquatic immunology among young researchers. The ISFSI conferences are held once every three years, the first ISFSI conference was held in 2013, in Vigo, Spain, and the second conference was organized in Maine, USA in 2016, the third conference was held in Gran Canaria, Canary Islands and in 2022 the fourth ISFSI conference was organized in Bodø, Norway. In all these conferences, over 250 international delegates including researchers, students, research institutes and industry had participated. The conference covered a wide range of topics including, aquatic diseases, immunology, microbiology and molecular biology. The conference aimed at reducing the impact of antibiotics on environment by using vaccines, mitigation of aquatic diseases in farmed fish and shellfish, understand the molecular functions of the immune system in aquatic animals, and improve animal welfare and eventually ensure food safety for human consumption.
